    Rođena u Sarajevu 7.1.1948. Osnovnu školu i gimnaziju završila u Beogradu. Na Filozofskom fakultetu u Beogradu diplomirala u junu 1971. na grupi za savremenu istoriju, a magistrilala u julu 1974. godine. Doktorirala na istom fakultetu 24. februara 1984. godine sa temom: Naučnici Srbije i stvaranje jugoslovenske države 1914 - 1920. godine.

    Od 1972 - 2001. zaposlena u Istorijskom institutu SANU. Od maja 1986. do oktobra 1988. bila je član Predsedništva Republike Srbije. Od školske 1989/90 je angažovana kao profesor u Centru za multidisciplinarne studije Univerziteta u Beogradu na smeru za istoriju i filozofiju prirodnih nauka i tehnologije. Od 2001. redovni profesor savremene političke istorije na Fakultetu političkih nauka Univerziteta u Beogradu.

    Bavi se istorijom Srbije, Jugoslavije i Balkana u 19. i 20. veku, posebno nastankom inteligencije i elita, modernizacijom, razvojem školstva i učešćem intelektualaca u politici. Istraživala je u svim važnijim arhivima i bibliotekama u Srbiji i Jugoslaviji, kao i u Londonu, Parizu, Beču, Brlinu, Lajpcigu, Haleu, Minhenu, Bonu, Hajdelbergu, Darmštatu, Sofiji... Imala je stipendije Instituta za evropsku istoriju u Majncu (po dva meseca 1979. i 1994), Centra za uporednu istoriju evropskih društava u Berlinu (dva meseca 1996) i stipendiju "K. Jireček" za jednomesečno istraživanje u Beču (1993). Učestvovala na međunarodnim skupovima u Beču, Minhenu, Parizu, Dalfima, Krakovu, Varni, Blagoevgradu, Pečuju, Strazburu, Vankuveru i dr. Radove objavila na engleskom, nemačkom, francuskom, italijanskom i bugarskom jeziku.

    Bila je sekretar Saveza istoričara Jugoslavije (1975 - 1980), glavni urednik časopisa za istoriju nauke Flogiston (1995 - 2000), jedan od osnivača Udruženja za društvenu istoriju i Srpskog društva za istoriju nauke.

    Dobitnik je nagrade časopisa NIN za publicistiku 1986, za monografiju Naučnici Srbije i stvaranje Jugoslovenske države 1914 - 1920 i Plakete počasnog člana Međunarodnog univerzitetskog seminara u Blagoevgradu (Bugarska).
